Mindfulness
Mindfulness is defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.” The practice of mindfulness has been studied increasingly in recent years, with multiple studies finding positive outcomes for those who engage in it, including improved attention, increased self-compassion, a greater ability to regulate emotions, and a reduction of stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mindfulness is one of several healthful practices that can help manage the symptoms of childhood anxiety and depression. Please note that treatment for childhood anxiety or depression should be overseen by a qualified health professional.
